"death road" in Greece

Full of potholes, no safety barriers and a very slippery forest dirt road connecting Patiopoulos with Perdikaki in Aetoloakarnania has been described as the Greek “death road”.

Our country has an extensive network of mountain trails and serpentines, and a wide variety of dirt roads are widely used, especially in the outback. One of these is the path connecting Patiopoulos with Perdikaki (province of Valtos, Etoloakarnania). This road is used by locals, farmers and shepherds, as well as rare thrill seekers and connoisseurs of natural beauty, who find in it a special charm with a touch of adrenaline.

The road indicated, so to speak, is one of the most dangerous in Europe, located at an altitude of 700 meters and has a length of 12 kilometers. The narrow dirt road is replete with potholes and stones falling on it, and the driver is constantly “flirting” with a steep cliff.

In addition, in the event of a collision with an oncoming vehicle, maneuvering is almost impossible, and reversing is quite risky. The danger of the road increases during the winter months as landslides, which already hit the narrow dirt road, are exacerbated by rain or snow.
