3.5 thousand people were evacuated from cars stuck in Attica Odos

Greek rescue services evacuated 1,800 vehicles and 3,500 people who were in them, trapped in the snow on the main highway of the country of Attica Odos, leading to the international airport.

Greek government spokesman Yiannis Ikonomou said on Tuesday about the incident:

“It was a very difficult night, and superhuman efforts are being made to free the Attiki Odos from cars. The police, army, fire brigade, civil protection acted all night and were able to evacuate about 1.8 thousand cars from it. Another 1.2 “Thousand cars are still there. Overnight, 3,000-3,500 people were transported. Rescuers distributed blankets, water and food to people. There were commuter trains that constantly picked people up from highway exits to take them to the airport.”

Cyclone Elpis, which hit the country on Monday, January 24, brought snowfall and a drop in temperature. Due to broken wires without electricity and the Internet remained about a dozen districts of Athens and suburbs, mainly in the north of the region. Electricity problems have been recorded in many areas: Marousi, Chalandri, Psychiko, Heraklion, Metamorfosi, N. Philadelphia, Pefki, Keratea, Koropi, Kalyvia, Pallini, Pikermi, Drafi, Grammatiko, Marathon, Aleforos, Alepochos, Alepochos, Voula, N. Smirni, Alimo, Salamina and others.
Dozens of technicians have been sent to eliminate accidents, but they cannot always reach the accident site, and so far many houses remain without electricity, the Internet, and individual heating.

The authorities announced Tuesday day off. In Attica and other weather-affected areas, only supermarkets, gas stations and pharmacies will be open on Tuesday 25 January. Now it is not snowing, the air temperature is about -1°С. Due to a storm wind of 8-9 points on the Beaufort scale in the Aegean Sea, ships are prohibited from leaving the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrion. In many parts of Greece, frosts are kept down to -14-16°C. Meteorologists predict the bad weather will last until Wednesday. TASS.
