Kastoria: a bear cub got lost in the hotel courtyard

An unusual “guest” was noticed on the territory of a hotel in Kastoria – an apparently disorientated bear cub, approximately six months old, hid in fear in the courtyard of the hotel complex.

The Kastoria Forest Service was immediately notified. Its employees, together with representatives of Callisto, an environmental organization, began rescuing the baby, tells newsbeast.gr. Shortly before the incident, passers-by saw a mother bear and her cub nearby. Therefore, it was decided to send the bear cub to the mountain so that he could be reunited with his mother.

During this period, mother bears with their cubs quite often appear near places of human activity in search of food in fruit trees. Callisto's message reads:

“Mother bears are overly protective of their cubs. For this reason, if you encounter a small bear alone, do not approach it, as it is highly likely that its mother is nearby and feels threatened by the human presence. It is important to know that if there is a bear on your way, you need to remain calm and do not shout or try to scare it. You need to calmly move away, giving the bear room to continue on its way. Do not throw branches, stones or other objects under any circumstances, as the animal will perceive this act as a threat. In case you spot a bear moving very close to a residential area, notify the forest department and the police department of the area.”
