FocusBari: every third Greek gambles at least once a week


In 2023, gambling in Greece showed significant growth. The total amount of bets placed by Greeks on gambling in the first 8 months of 2023 amounted to 22.68 billion euros, an increase of 28.2% compared to the same period the previous year.

Of this amount, €16.9 billion is made in online gaming, €4.26 billion comes from OPAP games, €1.27 billion from casinos, €210 million from lotteries and €23.9 million from horse racing. According to a KapaResearch study commissioned by the Gaming Supervision Commission, in 2023, approximately 900,000 Greek citizens participated in illegal gaming networks, making transactions worth 1.7 billion euros.

These figures reflect the gambling activity of Greek citizens and can give an idea of ​​how it affects the country's economy.

In another study, according to FocusBari's new panhellenic study on the betting/lottery/gambling habits of Greeks, the Joker (Tζόκερ) is the clear “leader”.

In particular, according to:

  • Three out of four Greeks have “gambled” at least once in the last 12 months, be it betting on sports, the lottery or another game, online or in person.
  • 33% of Greeks bet/play at least one “game” of any form at least once a week or even every day
  • Among frequent “gamblers” there are more men than women, and every second frequent gambler is over 55 years old.
  • The “big leader” in betting/gambling is Joker (Tζόκερ): more than one in two Greeks claim to have played the game at least once in the last 12 months.
  • One in five Greeks say they should bet/play less, but a corresponding proportion think they would play more if it were easier.
  • Almost two out of three Greeks think the government should do more to protect players.

In general, the pace of the gambling market around the world is increasing:

  • Australia has the highest rate of gambling among adults, with 73% having gambled at least once in the last 12 months.
  • The global online gambling market is expected to reach $153 billion by 2029, with a growth rate of up to 10%.
  • In Russia, the volume of bets accepted by Russian legal bookmakers in 2023 amounted to 1.224 trillion rubles.
