USA: o "oddities" on Facebook and thefts… of corpse parts

In the US, a morgue worker is accused of selling parts of human remains. She faces up to 20 years in prison.

Candace Chapman Scott, 37, had a job transporting, cremating and embalming remains. She worked in a morgue in one of the cities in the American state of Arizona from October 2021 to July 15, 2022. The woman admitted that she stole parts of human remains and took them out of state for the purpose of fraud. writes The Guardian.

Prosecutors say that while working, Scott stole human body parts and fetal remains from a morgue and shipped them to an out-of-state buyer. According to the Associated Press, she committed this crime together with 41-year-old Jeremy Pauley, whom she met through a group “about oddities” on Facebook.

During the investigation, in September 2023, prosecutors announced that Pauley pleaded guilty to conspiracy. He “admitted to his role in a nationwide network of individuals who bought and sold human remains stolen from Harvard Medical School and a morgue in Arkansas.”

Now Candace Chapman Scott faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, at least three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
