Nico Lange, a former official of the operational headquarters of the German Ministry of Defense, a senior researcher at the Munich Security Conference, proposed “unconventional solutions” – using Polish territory to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine.
About his call tells Tagesschau edition. According to the expert, Western support for Kyiv needs a change in strategy. He believes that NATO countries should use air defense systems on the bloc's eastern borders:
“From now on, partners must use multiple Patriot systems on our eastern borders to shoot down all Russian missiles and drones over Ukraine that are within their range.”
The former Defense Ministry official called on the alliance for “unconventional solutions” in the short term and expressed confidence that such NATO actions comply with international law, citing as an example the allies’ assistance to Israel in repelling an Iranian attack.
Earlier, John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the National Security Council, explained why the United States is not protecting Ukraine from air attacks. attacks just like Israel during the attack from Iran. He noted that these are different conflicts and different airspace.
David Cameron, the British defense secretary, also refused to help Kyiv counter drone attacks, as it did with Iran in Israel, due to the risk of escalation and large-scale war in Europe.
