Easter 2024: Petrol, ferry and intercity bus prices skyrocket

Whatever mode of transport you choose, you'll have to put your hand deep in your pocket to get to your Easter holiday destination.

At Easter, traditionally, many people intend to visit their parents or simply go out of town, “for fresh air” to the countryside. But as experts say, no matter what means of transport you choose, it will cost you a pretty penny, since fuel prices, as well as tickets for KTEL and ferry, have jumped significantly on the eve of the holidays.

In particular, for those who choose to travel in their own car, you need to take into account that the grown the price of unleaded gasoline has increased the cost of travel significantly. In fact, for a trip to Thessaloniki (round trip) a family of four will have to spend about 215 euros (this is for fuel and tolls). And for a trip to Ioannina the cost will be close to 205 euros.

According to the latest data from the Liquid Fuel Price Monitoring Observatory (Παρατηρητηρίου Τιμών Υγρών Καυσίμων), the average price of unleaded gasoline reaches 1,972 euros per liter, while in other prefectures such as Evrytania, Kefalonia, Heraklion, Corfu, Cyclades, Lefkas, Samos and Phokis, its price exceeded 2 euros per liter.

On the other hand, the situation is not particularly different for those who decide to travel by sea or by intercity bus. Compared to last year, those who choose this type of transport pay 9% more for KTEL tickets.

However, this method is probably more beneficial for those traveling long distances and alone. since a trip for four people can be more expensive than by car. For example, a trip from Athens to Serres by KTEL costs 300 euros, and by car the cost reaches 248 euros.

The inclusion of Greek shipping in Europe's emissions trading system forces consumers to bear the burden of additional green costs, ending up paying for more expensive tickets. For example, four people who choose the nearby island of Andros for Easter will pay 300 euros (for car transportation), and if they choose Syros, the cost will reach 569 euros.
