Residents of 5 regions of Greece received "a storm warning"

Residents of Thessaly, Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Central Greece and the northern Aegean islands received a message via the emergency line <112> warning of impending severe thunderstorms and gale-force winds.

The message warned of severe thunderstorms and gale force winds and encouraged them “reduce movement unless absolutely necessary” from the evening of Friday, April 19, to the afternoon of Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Civil Defense Minister Vassilis Kikilias had already left for Thessaly at noon on Friday, an area flooded by Hurricane Daniel in September 2023 and currently subject to heavy rainfall. The Minister will remain overnight in the area, in the city of Larissa, to observe and coordinate meetings of the Risk Assessment Committee.

“The committee has partially raised the severe weather level and, based on the latest data, the storm will mainly affect the Thessaly region from Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning.”.

Local media such as taxydromos.gr reported that municipal teams were clearing drains on Friday afternoon, despite the fact that it had been clear for the last 3-4 days that the downpours would pass.

Intense weather events are expected to start from the west and quickly spread to the central and northern parts of the mainland, the Sporades Islands, Evia, the Cyclades Islands, the eastern Aegean Sea and possibly western Crete, and then to the Dodecanese.

Rain and possible storms are expected in Athens and Attica overnight from Friday to Saturday.

The wind will be strong and reach 7 and in some places 8 on the Beaufort scale.
