Building collapsed in Piraeus: 1 killed, 3 injured, 7 arrested


An old building collapsed in Piraeus on Tuesday morning, killing one person and injuring three others.

The deceased is a police officer and, in particular, a special guard, 31 years old, who served in the direct action unit, in the detachment of ΔΙΑΣ South-East Attica. At the time of the tragedy he was not on duty.

The building is located on Neoria Street in Pasalimani and according to the fire department, work was being carried out on the building. According to the mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Muralis, who appeared on the show “Super Katerina”, 9 people worked in the building, and so far it is believed that there is no one under the rubble.

There are 24 firefighters at the scene with eight engines and a rescue dog.

Earlier it was reported that firefighters were trying to rescue one person who was in a truck at the scene, who was trapped under the rubble.

The operation to extract the victim was completed, and the unconscious person was taken away by an ambulance. It is noted that work was underway in this building, and construction workers were there at the time of the collapse.

Authorities were informed of the incident around 09:30 am and 24 firefighters, 8 engines and an EMAK team with a special rescue dog arrived at the scene.

The fire department previously reported that “An operation is underway to extract an injured man from a truck who was crushed under construction materials after the partial collapse of a two-storey abandoned building on Neoria Street in Akti Moutsopoulou in Piraeus.”

Seven arrests were made at the Municipal Theater police station. We are talking about a contractor and six workers.
