50% of people suffer from metabolic syndrome without even knowing what it is

The FGA Center is conducting an important and large questionnaire survey on how modern lifestyles affect human health.

This study is aimed at participants over 18 years of age who complete a questionnaire anonymously. Of the current participants, 52% are male and 48% female, belonging to various age groups. The first results indicate the prevalence of the “scourge of our time” – metabolic syndrome (MetS).

But what is metabolic syndrome and who does it affect? This usually applies to people with a large waist circumference or increased body weight (increased body mass index, BMI) and a sedentary lifestyle, as well as an irregular and usually unbalanced diet.

Metabolic syndrome is not a disease, but a combination of factors that increase the risk of developing diseases.

An indicator of the inability to understand whether someone has this problem is the following figures revealed by the study:

  • 83.33% of respondents state that they do not have metabolic syndrome,
  • 48% admitted that such a problem exists,
  • 55.88% of participants noted slight weight gain,
  • 57.42% – difficult weight loss (inability to lose weight even if you make efforts to do so).

Regarding another risk factor, lack of physical activity, 47% of Greek respondents do not exercise at all, and 46% do little (from 1 to three times a week).

The exact etiology of metabolic syndrome is still not fully understood. Several studies have reported strong associations of MetS with insulin resistance, oxidative stress and the role of white adipose adipocytes (WAT), chronic microinflammation, obesity and the gut microbiome.
