The number of juvenile offenders in Greece is growing

Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis announced new data on juvenile crime in an interview with ERT.

We want to do a big reset in the police force. This is the task of revitalizing law enforcement agencies so that they can respond to the current situation related to human rights, security and protection of the weak“, – he said.

Regarding the plan being implemented ΕΛΑΣ on combating juvenile delinquency, the minister noted that “the issue of criminal prosecution of minors is very sensitive“. At the same time, he announced that in a few days the Sub-Administration for Juvenile Affairs of Attica will be put into operation new five-digit number with specially trained operators who will receive messages 24 hours a day for emergency intervention/assistance.

“Operators are being trained right now and will continue to be trained so that we can handle calls at all times from parents, at-risk juveniles and citizens who notice delinquent children in the neighborhood,” he said. In addition to this new five-digit number, Michalis Chrysochoidis named the entire network of actions to combat juvenile delinquency, which includes:

  • As a precaution, there is a “relaxed” police presence in each square, mostly unarmed policewomen, but also plainclothes security police officers so that they can intervene if anything happens.
  • Minor children who systematically commit petty robberies and thefts are registered.
  • It operates a panic button, similar to a domestic violence system, that can be used as many times as necessary so that if an incident occurs, the victim can press it and immediately notify the police.

“This is a problem that has emerged in recent years. Over the past two months, we have had 500 arrests of minors and parents,” the minister emphasized.
