The central market of Athens, Varvakio agora, is already ready for an influx of shoppers preparing for the start of Lent.
The head of the fish market, Vasilis Simos, speaking today on the ERT channel, noted that prices have been reduced by 1-2 euros, and the market’s opening hours are from 7 a.m. Sunday to noon on Clean Monday.
Retail areas will be closed for one hour only (at noon on Sunday for cleaning). At the same time, Mr. Simos added that prices will not change, and “there are no problems with the availability of products.”
Regarding prices, the President mentioned that Ecuadorian dark shrimp (medium size) sell for about 8-9 euros (from 10-11 euros last year), Argentine red shrimp go up to 12 euros, squid cost 8.98 euros, i.e. e. two euros lower than last year’s price, and trapsal tentacles at 7.98 euros (1 euro cheaper than last year).
“We are aiming for smaller profits and trying to serve people who are financially vulnerable,” Mr. Simos emphasized and recalled that Varvakio agora also sells online.
