Supermarkets: Today is the premiere of the “Lenten Basket” – what products are included in it

On March 13, a measure to support vulnerable segments of the population called “Lenten Basket” will start in supermarkets. The measure will be in force until Holy Saturday (May 4), as provided for by the relevant decision of the Greek Ministry of Development.

“Lenten Basket” is an expansion of the already existing “Family Basket”, by adding three new categories of food products, so that every home has all the necessary products for the Lenten table at good prices. This:

  1. Halva.
  2. Salads, spreads (from eggplant, cheese, caviar of small fish “taramas”, etc.).
  3. Frozen seafood (at least two types).

Development Minister Kostas Skrekas said: “We want every home to have access to quality products at the lowest possible prices on these holy days.” He added that the “Lenten Basket” includes all the necessary food products for every household in connection with Lent: “No citizen will be deprived of access to these precious goods, which traditionally should grace every family table. The government will continue to take all necessary initiatives to provide practical assistance to all consumers.”

“The Lenten basket will be valid until May 4, that is, Holy Saturday, so that everyone can purchase these products. That is, in addition to the goods already included in the “Family Basket” and intended for fasting, such as legumes, rice, pasta and frozen vegetables, halva, frozen seafood and lean salads are added,” said Sotiris, Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Protection Anagnostopoulos.

“When it comes to frozen seafood, there are two interesting facts. Each supermarket will issue two categories, a minimum of two items, for Lent, while, according to the Greek statistical service, frozen seafood costs about 4% cheaper than they were at the same time last year,” added Mr. – Mr. Anagnostopoulos. “Family basket”, list of existing products:
