A mother gave life to her 35-year-old son by donating her kidney to him.

“I wasn’t afraid because I did it with all my heart so that he could have a better and quality life,” says the mother who “gave a second life” to her son.

A resident of Thessaloniki, Stavroula Noka, successfully underwent the operation and is preparing to be discharged, feeling proud of her decision to donate a kidney to her son. The 35-year-old kidney transplant recipient remains under medical supervision. “Thank you, mom, for the gift. You gave me life again. I can’t wait to get up, come home and hug you,” says the son.

For a week now, two operating room nurses and an anesthetist have been moving every Tuesday for 13 weeks to AHEPA’s “Hippocrates Hospital” to cover critical staffing shortages and speed up kidney transplants.

Of the two kidney transplants that are performed every month at Ipokratio, a total of six will be performed in the next three months, saving dozens of patients and changing their lives.

Despite a serious shortage of anesthesiologists at the hospital, 12 living donor transplants were performed in 2022, and 18 in 2023.
