A few hours after the first marriage between women at the Athens City Hall, Mayor Haris Doukas published a post accompanied by photographs from the ceremony.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that every citizen of Athens has the freedom to live and love as they wish,” the official said.
Danae Deligeorgi and Alexia Beziki officially entered into an alliance with all the solemnity inherent in the event. Next to them were their loved ones who support a couple. Those gathered could not hide their emotions.
Reuters was also present at Athens City Hall to document the proceedings frame by frame, from the preparations of the two women just before the ceremony, the applause of their relatives and friends, and the tears of joy and relief.
After the ceremony, the words were said: “I don’t have words to describe the emotions I’m experiencing right now. I feel relief, recognition and great joy that everyone came here and experienced such indescribable feelings. Love wins.”
