Justin Trudeau’s government in Canada has proposed legislation that would give judges the power to place a person under house arrest if they believe he Maybe commit a crime, i.e. as a precaution!
Critics warn the bill represents a clear abuse of power and could stifle any notion of free speech. A specific law allows house arrest and an electronic bracelet for a person who is considered likely to commit a crime in the future. In other words, if a judge finds that there is probable cause for a future hate crime, an as-yet-innocent member of the public may be sentenced to house arrest with electronic tags, mandatory drug testing and a ban on Internet communication!
Even failure to cooperate will add another year to your prison sentence. If this is not the creation of a “thought police” as in George Orwell’s 1984, then what is it? How do you define a hate crime? According to the bill, this is a statement expressing “disgust or arrogance”!
However, this is not the same as “contempt or hostility,” speech that “degrades, hurts, or insults.” In short, if someone expresses disgust at the policies of the Trudeau government, they are automatically a candidate for being locked in their own home.
The Canadian government has not thought to include a grading system to determine the relative acceptability of the words “offend”, “offend”, “humiliate”, “disdain”, “dislike”, “despise”, “disgusted” and “malign”. Under Bill C-63, a person could be placed under house arrest even for life, since their “crime” would depend on the distinction between “dislike” and “disgust.”
