Greece: a woman became pregnant for the first time after receiving frozen ovarian tissue transplantation

A 39-year-old woman with a history of cancer who underwent cryopreservation of ovarian tissue in 2013 is currently 6 months pregnant.

A unique case for Greece is presented by the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine on the occasion of the upcoming 4th Panhellenic Conference on the theme “Innovative Approaches”. This is a woman who was diagnosed with blood cancer (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) 16 years ago, for which she underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In 2013, the lymphoma recurred. However, this time the patient, before starting cancer treatment, planned to resort to cryopreservation of ovarian tissueto preserve the opportunity to have children later.

Cryopreservation of ovarian tissue is a relatively new technique for fertility preservation. It involves collecting ovarian tissue and freezing it for future use. The collection of this tissue requires a surgical operation – laparoscopy. The method protects the reproductive ability of women when threatened by the use of methods for treating malignant diseases and allows for the restoration of normal ovarian function in the future.

In 2021, after recovery, she underwent surgery – previously frozen ovarian tissue was transplanted. Today Irini Koka is six months pregnant.

This case will be the subject of special interest, research and commentary at the 4th Panhellenic Conference on Reproductive Medicine “Innovative Approaches”, as the technical aspects and clinical protocols of this scientific project will be discussed.
