108 products for which the average price has decreased

From March 1, consumers will see a significant reduction in prices for supermarket product categories, thanks to new measures to combat inflation, the Greek Ministry of Development said.

Implementation of four measures that are being carried out for the first time in Europe, aimed at permanently de-escalating inflation. For example, from today, consumers will see lower prices for baby milk as a 7% business gross profit cap comes into effect.

“We expect that the initial prices of 1,500 products will be reduced from the beginning of March,” were the words of the Prime Minister at a cabinet meeting yesterday.

The government’s decision to push ahead with reform requiring suppliers to cut their offerings to retailers by 30%, with a commitment to reduce list prices by the same amount, has resulted in more than 3,000 product cuts. The categories include: household chemicals, cleaning products (washing and dishwashing powders/capsules, bleaches) and personal care products (shampoo and conditioner, shower gels, soap, toothpaste and baby diapers).

The reform led to a significant reduction in average wholesale prices for seven product categories. In particular, the average price reduction for baby diapers is 18.1%, for shampoos, gels and shower conditioners – 17%, for toothpaste – 15.1%, for washing powders – 15.6%, for dishwashing detergents – 16%, for cleaning products of all types – 15.8% and soap 12.7%.

For example, the average price reduction for the following brands is as follows: Pampers (baby diapers) 18.9%, Colgate (toothpastes) 18.8%, Ariel (washing powders) 19.5%, Syoss (shampoo, shower gels and conditioner ). 23.0%, Ava (dishwashing detergent) 17.5%, Old Spice 84 (shampoo, shower gels and conditioner) 20.4%. It is reported that in February 2024, after the implementation of the measure, 890 product codes were revalued, while in the same period last year (February 2023) 3,760 product codes were revalued. The implementation of regulation contributed to a reduction in revaluations by 76% from year to year.

The latest government measure obliges suppliers of fresh produce (fruit, vegetables, meat) to sell their products to retailers at “net prices”. Discounts for product returns are allowed in the amount of only 3% of the sales price, excluding discounts, credits and other incentives. This measure contributes greater transparency in fresh produce pricing. It is expected that the use of net prices will gradually lead to a reduction in the cost of these products.
