“Their profits or our lives” – demonstrations take place in the center of Athens

Demonstrations are currently taking place in central Athens as part of a 24-hour strike called by ADEDY, the Athens Labor Centre, PAME, labor centers and private and public sector federations to mark the anniversary of the Tempi train accident, which killed 57 people.

Under the main slogan “Our lives are higher than their profits, a real salary increase, not a mocking increase”ADEDY is currently marching on Stadiou Street, demanding, as the statement says, “a life with rights, a job with a real increase, not a mocking increase of 1.5 euros a day, significant measures to solve the problem of poverty.”

At the same time, dozens of trade unions, federations, workers’ centers and trade union organizations are marching in Panepistimiou under the slogan “It’s either their profit or our lives.”

The large rally at the Propylaea began with a minute’s silence in memory of the 57 people killed in the Tempe train accident.

As the proclamation says, “Today, February 28, 2024, marks one year since the Tempi crime, which claimed the lives of 57 of our fellow citizens, most of them students and young children, causing untold grief throughout the country and leaving an open wound in dozens of families.”

Public transport is on hold

Public transport is at a standstill today. Bus and trolleybus workers announced a suspension of work from the beginning of the shift until 9 am and from 9 pm until the end of the shift.

The railways, including the suburban railways of Athens and Thessaloniki, are on a 24-hour strike by trade unions.

Strikes are also taking place on the metro, trams and trains, as 7 trade unions have announced their participation in the mobilization with a 24-hour strike.

Movement restrictions

As they say in statement, EL.AS, for better traffic management and combating traffic jams, will take the necessary measures to regulate traffic with the implementation of intersections and traffic stops. In particular, roads will be blocked around Propylaea, Klatmonos Square, Omonia Square (Piraeus, Patision, etc.), Syntagma Square (Amalias Avenue, Vasilisis Sofia), as well as Panepistimiou and Stadiou.
