Tempi: "This is not a random event, this is a crime against society"

Martha Psaropoulou was on the fateful train to Tempi with her best friend. The two of them, as Martha’s mother Maria Karystianu says, did everything together. Together in life, together in death…

The girls were among 57 of our fellow citizens who died in the most tragic way, leaving behind family and friends, mourning them and a year later continuing to seek justice.

“There were three best friends who were always together, one girl, fortunately, left the day before. The two of them decided to stay in Athens for one more day… and they were even supposed to take the first train, but since they did not have time to wake up, then get on the next one…”, says Ms. Karystianu in a conversation with Anti Vulgari in the documentary “#ΜΑΜΑΕΡΧΟΜΑΙ”. (Mom, we have arrived)

“This is a crime against citizens, against society…”

“What happened on this route was not an accident, because everything worked well, and it was an accident… This happened because trains ran without safety on all routes for years, which is a crime against citizens, against society, this not only our children, it could be anyone, and you see how arrogantly and how indifferently they treated this issue later, when a month later the train was launched again… this train, which has no safety, it did not transport goods, it transported of people…”she adds.

Let us remind you that Ms. Karystianu is the president of the Association of Relatives of Accident Victims.

“You see how arrogantly and indifferently this issue is being resolved.”

She further emphasizes that, among other things, she was terribly shocked by the attitude of the Supreme Court. “So who protects the citizen? His life?” she asks.

“We can’t in 2023… say it’s the station manager’s fault.”

When asked about Convention 717, Ms. Karystianou said that it was directly related to the accident. “I think it’s arrogant to hear things like that, I won’t say it’s an insult to my intelligence because that’s a funny thing to say, a primary school child can understand how they’re connected. But it’s a real shame because if it weren’t for that and all safety systems were completed, I don’t care about the competence of the worker… obviously he was unfair alone, but what does that mean? In 2023, living in Europe, where everything is automated and leaves no room for human error, I no longer I can say that it is the station master’s fault, because we heard one politician say that it was the station master’s fault because “he didn’t press the button.”

It is noted that then transport minister Konstantinos Karamanlis told a parliamentary inquiry committee that no security system could prevent human error.

“I believed that together we could achieve more.”

Maria Karystianu is a woman who, despite a huge loss, found the spiritual strength to come forward and fight for justice together with all the relatives of the victims. “I consider it an insult to hear such things, I will not say that this is an insult to my mental level…” “The idea of creating an association came to me almost reflexively in March. At first I thought that I needed to meet people who suffered the same as me, and then see how we could organize it, because I understood that our struggle will be very difficult, many years and very painful, and we will have to somehow support each other… I also believed that by uniting we could achieve more, because from the very beginning I understood who we were up against”she explains.
