Chaos in Brussels: farmers and police fight outside the European Council

In Brussels, where today a meeting of 27 agriculture ministers is taking place EUchaos reigns as farmers lined up their tractors in the city center try to break through the police cordon and approach the building.

Farmers who arrived in central Brussels with carts full of soil, straw and manure lit tire fires as police tried to put them out with water cannons.

More than 600 tractors are lined up in the city center and the main street, Rue de la Loie, is blocked off. With banners”Milk the cow, not the farmer“pastoralists and farmers call on ministers to be “prudent and one day go with them to work, to the field, with horses or animals, to see that it is not so easy because of the conditions.” Since early morning, police have also closed surrounding roads to prevent anyone from approaching the European Council.

Less than a month after the “historic” rural mobilization in the Belgian capital on February 1, when more than 1,300 tractors filled the city’s streets, farmers returned today to express their anger at the lack of response from European authorities to the just demands on which their very survival depends.

They demand fair incomes, a reduction in administrative burdens, an end to free trade agreements and an increase in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget.
