Greece exceeds the EU average for the share of renewable energy sources in electricity consumption

Renewable energy sources (RES) will account for 41.2% of gross electricity consumption in EU in 2022, Eurostat said on Wednesday. In Greece, the share of renewable energy sources in electricity consumption in 2022 exceeded the EU average and reached almost 43%.

This is up 3.4 percentage points from 2021 (37.8%) and significantly ahead of other sources of electricity generation such as nuclear (less than 22%), gas (less than 20%) or coal (less than 17%) . Overall, the share of renewable energy increased by 5.7% from 2021 to 2022.

In Greece, the share of renewable energy sources in electricity consumption in 2022 exceeded the European Union average and reached almost 43%. Renewable electricity dominates in Sweden, where the majority of electricity consumed in 2022 comes from renewable sources (83.3%, mostly hydro and wind), followed by Denmark (77.2%, mostly wind) and Austria (74.7%, mostly hydropower). Shares above 50% were also recorded in Portugal (61.0%), Croatia (55.5%), Latvia (53.3%) and Spain (50.9%).

At the other end of the scale, the lowest share of electricity from renewable sources was recorded in Malta (10.1%), Hungary (15.3%), the Czech Republic (15.5%) and Luxembourg (15.9%).

Wind and hydropower accounted for more than two-thirds of the total electricity produced from renewable sources (37.5% and 29.9%, respectively). The remaining third comes from solar energy (18.2%), solid biofuels (6.9%) and other renewable sources (7.5%). Solar energy is the fastest growing source: in 2008 it accounted for only 1% of electricity consumed in the EU.

It is worth noting that the use of renewable energy sources, contrary to the information promoted by the authorities and the media, does not lead to a reduction in the cost of electricity, but to an increase in the cost of electricity. Because “green energy” is much more expensive than traditional sources.
