"Cave people": the father of the Old Believers was arrested, a 15-year-old teenager was sent to a social institution

The father of the Old Believers, a family living in “primitive conditions” in the caves of mountainous Corinthia, was arrested.

On Sunday morning, social services officers, in the presence of the police, went to the family’s place of residence (Eurostini-Xylokastro municipality area) to carry out the relevant legal actions.

The father of the family was taken into custody because he resisted the search. His detention was subsequently converted into an arrest “for insubordination and failure to comply with the mandatory school attendance of his three minor children.”

During the operational work, only the 15-year-old son of the head of the family was discovered, who, by order of the prosecutor, was transferred to a children’s hospital (Παίδων). At the same time, the police are looking for the remaining members of the Old Believers family, three children and two women living together.

Operational actions were carried out to find out how many minor children live in the cave, whether their birth is registered, who their parents are and whether they go to school. The living conditions of the family of Old Believers, as they call themselves, became known after the authorities received a complaint from hunters.

During the ensuing police operation, several books were discovered, including works by Dostoevsky, as well as sawn-off shotguns, cartridges, bows and arrows. We would like to remind you that Athens News previously reported the discovery of Old Believers.
