Will the concepts of “father” and “mother” be abolished in Greece?

A report by the parliamentary scientific service on marriage and adoption of children by homosexual couples speaks of a “loophole” in the law, which opens the way for repeal just a year after the law was passed. the words “father” and “mother” despite Mitsotakis’s statements.

Objections to the government bill, which is being discussed in plenary on Wednesday and will be voted on on Thursday, are that children will not be able to be legally related to their parents. The report says about same-sex couples: “All of the above provisions establishing kinship refer, for example, not to “parenthood,” but to “paternity” or “maternity.”

“In this sense, especially in the case of children born, for example, through medical assistance during the marriage or civil partnership of their same-sex parents, the children will not be able to be legally related to both of their parents by direct application of existing provisions on the establishment of relationship based on the presumption of paternity and motherhood.

They are related to one parent, and this raises additional issues arising from the lack of a legally established relationship with a same-sex spouse, such as family and inheritance rights, and issues of citizenship of the child.”.

The report’s authors also raise concerns about Article 11 due to possible unfavorable treatment of same-sex couples in Greece compared to couples from abroad. This is due to the fact that the state is obliged to recognize parental relationshipswhich have been or will be registered in the future in the public documents of a third country, regardless of the method of their establishment and regardless of whether this procedure is adopted by national legislation.

“The issue of gender binding of parental roles will arise during the registration of adoptions if, in parallel with the proposed rules, changes are not made to the relevant legislation,” – the report emphasizes.

Of course, A. Skertos said earlier that the question of the constitutionality of this law is no longer raised (some kind of constitution, forget…), and the law will be put to a vote in parliament on Thursday, but given what is written, this is probably , is just the beginning for the Mitsotakis government and how it sees the institution of the family.
