Former US President Donald Trump called on the Senate not to approve assistance to other countries, in particular, Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
On the social network Truth Social, he sharply criticized such an approach, since he believes that the United States should give money not just like that, “on parole,” but only on credit, in the form of a loan:
“We must never again give money without hope of return or without certain conditions. The United States must no longer be stupid.”
The ex-president believes that the Senate should not vote for an aid package that provides support for Ukraine and Israel:
“They want to give almost 100 billion dollars to several countries, 100 billion dollars! I said, ‘Why are we doing this? If you do this, then give them not $100 billion, but a loan.”
On February 8, the US Senate adopted a decision that could bring the release of an aid package to Ukraine closer. Senators voted to begin debate on the bill, which would writes publication “Correspondent”, the allocation of about 95 billion dollars in assistance to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other needs.
On Sunday February 11th, as he writes Reuters, the Senate voted to clear the final procedural hurdle and moved closer to a final vote on the bill, which will take place in the coming days. 67 senators were in favor of the final vote, 27 were against. Eighteen Republicans supported the bill after Donald Trump, the dominant Republican candidate for the White House, criticized it, saying foreign aid should come in the form of loans.
Once passed by the Senate, the bill will move to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where it faces an uncertain future. The bill could move faster if Democrats and Republicans agree to speed up its consideration. But so far such an agreement has not been reached.
