Greece is well known throughout the world for its islands. At the same time, among the many popular ones there are also many unknown ones, which very often are not even suitable for living.
However, there is another category of islands in Greece. Those that are not in the sea, but on the lakes of the country. Vidronisi is one of those that stands out not only for its location, but also for being a refuge for many birds and other animals. Paradise on earth, which is protected in a special way.
Vidronisi belongs to Western Macedonia. The islet is located in Prespes, in Mala Prespa (μικρή Πρέσπα), and is a small island with active life. And this is because dozens of animals and birds that love the waters of the lake find shelter there. The tiny island, also called “Vidrinetsi” by locals, administratively belongs to the regional unit of Florina, and you have probably seen it from afar if you have been to Prespes. We say “from afar” because you cannot approach the island for a very important reason.
It is a refuge for birds who have managed to protect their nests and chicks in this way. Their peace would be seriously disturbed if boats with visitors or fishermen kept arriving at Vidronisi.
There is a small church (not functioning) on the island. It has been officially decided that Vidronisi will function as a protected habitat and refuge for silver pelicans and cormorants.
