Supermarkets: turnover in 2023 amounted to 11.8 billion euros


Supermarket turnover was a record 11.8 billion euros in 2023, up 1.077 billion euros or 10%, according to research firm Circana, with sales up 2.5% on 2022.

The largest sales growth in 2023 was recorded in the household goods category (detergents, cleaning products, office supplies, etc.), 9.5%. Sales of packaged food increased 9.3% and personal care and beauty products increased 8.6%.

The share of private label products by value in 2023, including Lidl Hellas sales, increased to 26.3% from 25.8% in 2022, with a growth rate of 11.3%. While the growth rate of branded goods is 8.6%.

“Private label” leads in the food sector: their share is 26.7% (from 26.3% in 2022). In the personal care and beauty category, the share of private label products is 20.9%, and in the household category it reaches 25.7%.

As for promotions, they concerned mainly the categories of food and household items – 25.3% and 25.3%, respectively. The total turnover of high-demand goods increased to 25.3% in 2023 from 22.5% in 2022.

The leaders in price growth in 2023 were detergents and cleaning products: the price increase reached 11%. Next come culinary semi-finished products with a price increase of 8.8% and snacks with a price increase of 8%. The smallest price increase was recorded for alcoholic beverages (3.2%).
