Europe’s largest study of medicinal cannabis, involving 20,000 patients, will be conducted in the UK.
The ambitious Twenty21 project, which will see 20,000 patients receiving medical cannabis over 48 months, is approaching launch. The aim of the initiative is to persuade the NHS to start prescribing cannabis preparations for a range of medical conditions. Let us remind you that medical cannabis was legalized in 2018. However, as the program’s creators explain, not all patients have access to it, as the medical community remains skeptical about whether it can benefit patients.
“Medical cannabis remains out of reach for too many,” says Professor David Nutt, a member of the independent scientific body Drug Science, the organization behind Project Twenty21. The expert adds: “Patients are left without treatment or are forced to turn to the black market.” The situation with prescriptions needs to change.” Details of the scheme, backed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP), are expected to be made public in the coming days. Project Twenty21 will study the effects of medical cannabis on patients with:
- chronic pain,
- epilepsy,
- multiple sclerosis,
- post-traumatic stress disorder,
- Tourette’s syndrome,
- generalized anxiety disorder.
The goal is to Collect as much evidence as possible about the benefits of medical cannabis. According to British media reports, around 28 million people in the UK suffer from some form of chronic pain.
