The US was angry about the wiretapping of its officials in Greece

The US has confirmed that Predator is bugging its officials in Greece during their conversations with Greek officials and officials.

Previous measures have included issuing an executive order banning the US government’s use of surveillance software that poses a risk to US national security or foreign policy interests, as well as targeting companies that develop such software that has enabled the abuse of sophisticated surveillance tools, particularly INTELEXA.

What the legislation published by the US State Department says:

“The United States remains concerned about the growing abuse of such software around the world to facilitate repression, restrict the free flow of information, and violate human rights.

Their misuse threatens privacy and freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and cooperation.

Such use has been linked to arbitrary detentions, disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the worst cases.

In addition, misuse of these tools poses a threat to security and intelligence, as well as to American personnel.

The United States stands for human rights and fundamental freedoms and will continue to seek accountability for those involved in the misuse of commercial spyware.

This visa restriction policy allows the State Department to impose restrictions on individuals believed to be engaging in the misuse of commercial spyware to target, arbitrarily, or unlawfully surveil, harass, suppress, or intimidate people, including journalists, activists, others perceived to be dissidents, members of marginalized communities or vulnerable populations, or family members of these targeted individuals.

Persons believed to be facilitating or benefiting financially from the misuse of commercial surveillance software described in the above section, including those involved in the development, management or operational control of companies providing technology similar to this software, governments or acting on behalf of governments involved in the activities described in the above section, as well as members of the immediate family of persons subject to the above restrictions.

“Immediate family” includes spouses and children of any age.”.
