Ex-governor of Sevastopol arrested in London

46-year-old Dmitry Ovsyannikov, the former Russian governor of Sevastopol, was detained in London. British authorities suspect him of violating sanctions legislation and he has been placed under arrest.

Ovsyannikov served as governor of Sevastopol from 2017 to 2019. Before and after this period, he was Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. In 2020, he was fired due to a scandal with indecent behavior at Izhevsk airport.

According to The Times, the ex-governor was detained at his London home and will appear in court on February 20. He is accused of circumventing sanctions and opening an account in a London bank, as well as four payments totaling 65 thousand pounds sterling and storing 77.5 thousand pounds sterling in cash.

Sanctions against it were introduced by the UK in 2020. His assets are frozen. Ovsyannikov contained in one of the London prisons. The Russian BBC service notes that this is an unusual situation: as a rule, those arrested for non-violent crimes are released on bail.

In 2023, Dmitry Ovsyannikov was removed from the sanctions list EU by decision of the European Court. The court motivated this by the fact that the official no longer holds positions for which he was sanctioned. However, he was not excluded from the British list.
