Former minister Yiannis Ikonomou, during the launch of his book Conservatism in Greece, spoke out against a bill that would make it legal for the government to accept the adoption of minor children by LGBTQ+ people, adding that traditional right-wing voters would likely leave the party after feeling betrayed .
Yiannis Ikonomou’s statements are particularly significant because for many years he was a minister in the Mitsotakis governments and, of course, remains a member of parliament.
“As a member of the New Democracy Party, my concern is that the overemphasis on liberal principle turns our backs on our party base, people who love family, respect tradition and religion.
If we betray them, they may abandon us.”he said, emphasizing that “The de-ideologization of the conservative space will not help either Greece or ND.”
“Not every desire can be considered a right. Turning every desire into a right does not contribute to the unity of society, he emphasized. – My party is strong because it is identically strong. It is the mass character and popularity of New Democracy that allows it to function as a conduit of power to promote liberalism and reform in Greece.” Ikonomou also recalled that “we have the recent example of France. The French right was almost destroyed because they turned their backs on the main pillars – nation, family, religion.”
