A Greek crew member of the oil tanker Saint Nicholas, seized by the Iranian navy on January 11, was freed and returned home on Friday afternoon.
Iran, in a statement, claimed responsibility for the seizure of a Greek-owned tanker in the Gulf of Oman, stressing that it did so because the vessel “St. Nikolas“”works for the USA.”
The 19-year-old sailor arrived at Athens International Airport accompanied by the Greek ambassador in Tehran.
“I’m very touched. I didn’t expect it to end so quickly. I’m happy to be back with my family and home again.”– the young sailor told reporters.
He also thanked the Iranians, who he said “they behaved excellently and expedited the process of my repatriation”as well as the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As soon as news arrived in Athens that the ship St Nicholasowned by Greece, was captured, and among the crew members there was one Greek, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs used all necessary diplomatic and maritime channels to repatriate the young man.
The rest of the tanker’s crew, 18 Filipino sailors, have not yet been released. They remain aboard the tanker anchored at Iran’s Badar Abas port while they wait for their country’s diplomatic mission to complete repatriation procedures, Empire Navigation said Thursday. in.gr.

We’re talking about a tanker.”St. Nikolas” under the flag of the Marshall Islands (formerly Suez Rajan), which is associated with the Greek shipping company Empire Navigation.
On Thursday morning, armed men who Tehran said belonged to the country’s navy boarded the tanker. Maritime security company Ambrey said “six armed men dressed in black” boarded the vessel. During the invasion they covered the surveillance cameras.
The incident began early this morning in the waters between Oman and Iran, near the Omani city of Sohar, through which ships pass in and out of the Strait of Hormuz.

As reported by IRNA on Telegram carrying an announcement from the Iranian army: “According to a Navy public affairs report, this year the oil tanker Suez Rajan stole a US-led oil cargo belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran, transported it to that country’s ports and made it available to the United States.”
