"Black Digger" was searching for antiquities using a metal detector and a shovel… at an archaeological site

The 39-year-old man was arrested by police from the Cultural Heritage and Antiquities Department of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate.

The “black archaeologist” was arrested for violating the antiquities protection legislation by the police of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate at an archaeological site when he was searching for antiquities using a metal detector and a shovel.

As it was established, he was “caught red-handed” when he picked up the metal handle of a vase from the ground.

In addition, in his house in the village of Kavala, as well as in the house of his father, there were 11 bronze ancient coins falling (in the opinion of a competent archaeologist) under the protective provisions of the Antiquities Act, and 14 objects requiring further examination for value.

The metal detector, headphones and excavation tools used by the criminal were confiscated and will be sent to the Kavala Prosecutor’s Office for Administrative Offenses as evidence. And all 26 found objects will be transferred to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kavala for archaeological and historical research.

The detainee, along with the case filed against him, will be brought to the competent judicial authority.
