The railway line will connect Greece with Europe in 2026

Work is underway at a rapid pace on the railway line that will connect Greece with Europe. The Thessaloniki-Idomeni route is one of the most important cross-border connections between Greece and Europe.

This important project, according to ERGOSE, is planned to be completed by the beginning of 2026. The goal is to modernize the electrified railway line leading first to North Macedonia and then to Central Europe. This reopens the way for international passenger routes from Greece to other European countries. However modernization of this particular axle will improve freight transportation abroad. In particular, it will strengthen the movement of containers by rail to the Western Balkans.

The railway line is of great importance because, as a cross-border part of the TEN-T core network (Trans-European Transport Network connecting regions within the European Union and providing multimodal passenger and commercial transport), it can help redistribute vehicles for the transport of goods, “unloading” highways.

The total axis length of the Thessaloniki-Idomeni line, on which the new remote control signaling system and ETCS L1 will be installed, is 71 kilometers.
