In Colombia, a member of a gang that robbed safe deposit boxes in Nea Smyrni was arrested


A 47-year-old Colombian, a member of a criminal gang that broke into five bank vault safes in the Nea Smyrni area in 2022, was arrested by Colombian authorities on the basis of an Interpol Red Notice.

The burglary occurred on July 8, 2022. The attackers, as iefimerida.gr wrote in a corresponding report at the time, fled abroad after carrying out the robbery. The incident, which received wide publicity at the time, involved three Colombians, members of a transnational mobile criminal group specializing in bank robberies.

Statement ΕΛ.ΑΣ: “The Property Crimes Unit of the Attica Police Department, in connection with the investigation into the theft of five safes that occurred on July 8, 2022 in a bank store in Nea Smyrni, reports the identification of three foreigners, aged 47, 43 and 47, in against whom a case has been initiated for creating and joining a criminal organization and involved in the robbery. The necessary measures have been taken to issue European arrest warrants for members of the criminal group.

In accordance with the Interpol Red Notice and after cooperation with the competent authorities, the 47-year-old foreign national was identified on January 10, 2024 and arrested by Colombian authorities in Bogota as a member of a criminal organization.

Another member of the criminal organization was identified on November 4, 2023 and arrested authorities in Sweden on the basis of a European arrest warrant.
