Orban put forward a condition regarding lifting the veto on aid to Ukraine

The publication Politico talks about the nuances of Hungary’s conditions for lifting the veto on aid to Ukraine from the European Union.

Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary, said: he will agree to lift the veto on aid to Ukraine from EU on one condition. As Politico has learned, Budapest is proposing to vote on the allocation of funds on an annual basis, that is, to review funding for Ukraine every year.

Information received from three EU diplomats, writes the publication. Such a development of events would give the Hungarian prime minister the opportunity to block funding for Ukraine every year, or to receive concessions from Brussels for refusing a veto.

Hungary, the article says, formulated this proposal during a meeting of 27 EU budget experts on Friday and sent a corresponding document to the EU Council, where Belgium currently holds the presidency. According to a diplomat familiar with the negotiations, according to the Hungarian proposal, the EU will annually provide Ukraine with 12.5 billion euros in the form of grants and loans, which over four years will amount to the 50 billion euros proposed by the European Commission.

Some European diplomats are skeptical of the proposal, despite a change in the rhetoric of Hungary, which previously strongly opposed the allocation of funds to Ukraine in any form. They say the Hungarian proposal will not provide predictability for Ukraine:

“The EU’s seven-year budget is a multi-year structure, we can’t do it year after year.”

The issue of funding for Ukraine from the European Union is on the agenda of a meeting of ambassadors of EU member states scheduled for Wednesday.
