A series of explosions rocked New York

On Tuesday morning, residents of Roosevelt Island in New York reported the sound of explosions and three tremors, local media reported. Firefighting units and city electricity and gas supply operators arrived at the scene.

Reportedly, calls to emergency services began to arrive around 5:45 local time (13:45 Moscow time). “I just heard a loud sound like an explosion on Roosevelt Island,” The Mirror quotes a post from one social media user (without specifying names).

“Has anyone else felt an earthquake or explosion like the one that hit New York a few minutes ago?” another Roosevelt Island resident wrote.

“It was very loud! The walls were shaking and it was as quiet as my window rattling,” another New Yorker told Mail Online.

The Independent reports that “small tremors” were also felt by residents of the Upper East Side and Astoria, Queens (neighborhoods located across the East River from the Roosevelt Islands).

“We’re still trying to recover from this. It’s a scary thing,” the Astoria resident admitted.

According to Abc7, the “explosions” caused power outages on Roosevelt Island.

Helicopters lifted the air

New York firefighters have “initiated an emergency response protocol,” The Independent reports. Representatives of the city’s electricity and gas supply companies, Con Edison, were also called to the scene, RIA Novosti writes.

Footage distributed in the media and social networks shows how many emergency vehicles were killed as a result of the accident.

“There are four helicopters in the sky, apparently watching the area,” The Mirror quotes one of the island’s residents.

According to the fire service, the incident was brought under control at 07:08 local time.

In New York there were not explosions, but an earthquake: the US Geological Survey recorded tremors in the city center.

According to American seismologists, at 05:45 local time (13:45 Moscow time) in the Queens area, located near the island, an earthquake of magnitude 1.7 was recorded, the epicenter was located at a depth of 5 km. According to data provided to TASS by the press service of the New York Fire Department, eight minutes later they received a call from local residents about a “series of explosions and shaking” in the building.

According to Con Edison, a utility company in New York, complaints about power outages were recorded near the site of the incident.
