Electricity contracts: Euronews survey on Greek streets (video)

Greeks will face new electricity tariffs and a new pricing system in the new year. The government promises price reductions, but the Greeks expect a catch.

What does it promise to provide to consumers? alternatives between contracts with fixed and variable rates? In the country with the most expensive EU electricity, people do not believe in improvement due to the new pricing system.

The country is preparing to introduce new electricity contracts, tells euronews. You need to choose one of four options – between contracts with fixed and variable rates – before the onset of the new year. The population is confused, as a Euronews poll showed:

“The decision has not been made yet. The fact is that electricity suppliers are not helping us decide, the information they provide is limited. They have still announced tariffs. So it’s risky to choose now.”

Electricity subsidies in Greece will end at the start of the new year. Analysts convince us that all the bad things are behind us – after the jump in prices in 2022 and 2023, today they are expected to decrease and level out. However, consumers have lost all hope. An elderly Greek says: “I don’t believe that prices will go down. It won’t happen. Let’s wait, we’ll see everything with our own eyes!”

Many residents of the country fear that the “green” transition will lead to higher prices for electricity. Some experts believe that consumers’ search for the cheapest electricity supplier is similar to searching for the cheapest gas station. The difference in final prices is insignificant, but the final figure on the receipt may be higher due to taxes and fees.

It remains to be added that today in Greece electricity prices are almost twice the average European tariff. Paying such bills is simply unaffordable for many Greek households.
