The number of medical workers increased by 1.5%

Statistical Office of Greece (ELSTAT) today published data on the number of healthcare workers in 2022.

Health care professionals include doctors, dentists, pharmacists and physical therapists. In addition, data on existing pharmacies and pharmacists working in them is presented. The number of registered health professionals nationwide reached 103,717 in 2022, up from 102,166 in 2021, an increase of 1.5%.

Let us remind you that the healthcare system in Greece combines elements of the public and private sectors. In the public sector, there is a parallel National Health Service (NHS) and social insurance system. Since June 27, 2023, the Minister of Health of Greece is Michalis Chrysochoidis.

The healthcare system in Greece has faced serious challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic crisis. Greece is in 25th place out of 27 countries EU in terms of healthcare costs, while in Europe resources are allocated 2.5 times more, and in the UK – 4.5-5%.

This has led to a depletion of health care services with high costs and poor patient care. Greece is currently undergoing public health reforms aimed at improving the prevention, promotion and protection of public health.
