Ministry of Health: reform of the healthcare system

During the press conference, Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidaki mentioned the reform of the primary health care sector, prevention in the context of public health and the creation of a united front with a unified structure of all units.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that changes are coming aimed at expanding the number of general practitioners and therapists, as well as at the repatriation of doctors. “Doctors will have an incentive to choose Greece to work here,” said the deputy minister. She also reported on changes in the “rural service” (working after graduation in rural areas) and benefits for doctors wishing to obtain the specialty “General Medicine and Therapy”.

The two main problems facing the Greek healthcare system (PHY) today are financial and professional. The reform that will be implemented is designed to solve them.

In particular, rural doctors will join the system of personal doctors, the number of which will increase by 1,270 people in the coming months. By 2024, 2,500 new GPs and GPs will join the system. After rural service in the new operating structure, they will have the opportunity to join PHY with a net income of €30,000. Over the course of 2024, 2,500 new GPs and GPs will join the system. The purpose of the changes is to increase the percentage of general practitioners and therapists so that there is potential for primary care, and not a single citizen is left without medical services.

The work of the “personal doctor” will be supported by an assistant coordinator who will deal with the registered population. The goal, according to the deputy minister, is to organize a network of primary health care and improve services to citizens. She elaborated on the institution of the “personal physician,” a system that has weakened in recent months due to the low participation of private doctors.

The official explained that Apart from general practitioners and therapists, no other medical specialties will be included in the system. The goal of all the changes is to increase the share of primary care doctors, from the 6% of internists and general practitioners that Greece has today, to the total number of doctors to get closer to the 26% European average. According to Deputy Minister Irini Agapidaki, the corresponding bill is expected to be submitted before the end of the year.
