Georgia celebrates and rejoices after being awarded EU candidate status

On Friday, the Georgian parliament session opened to the sounds of the European Union anthem. The country is celebrating being granted candidate status for membership in the European Union.

How writes Euronews, Georgia expects to begin accession negotiations EU in December 2024. Earlier, at a meeting of the EU Council, the decision to open Tbilisi’s “first door” was announced, as well as start of negotiations on admission to the community of Ukraine and Moldova.

On March 3, 2022, Georgia, together with Moldova, officially submitted an application for EU membership, and on February 28, Kyiv sent a similar application. In June, EU leaders granted candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine, but rejected Georgia. The European Council noted that the leaders of the alliance countries decided to recognize Georgia’s European perspective and grant it candidate status immediately after fulfilling 12 “priorities.”

Shalva Papuashvili, speaker of the Georgian parliament, expressed hope that Georgia will be able to enter a new stage of relations with the EU and begin negotiations on joining the community in December next year.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, said granting Georgia EU candidate status was an attempt to “further annoy Russia.”
