Ilia: the strange story of the suicide of a 27-year-old gypsy

The alleged suicide of a 27-year-old Roma woman in the temporary detention center of the Iliya District Police Department raises serious questions.

According to police, the woman committed suicide using the jacket she was wearing, tying it to the bars of her cell. The woman has been accused of a number of offenses in recent years, mainly theft, and was recently arrested in the Amalia area for stealing a small amount and was yesterday taken to the Court of First Instance where she was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. Which – according to the court – must be executed due to offenses committed by her in the past.

The alleged suicide of a Roma woman in a temporary detention center raises serious questions, since a forensic expert did not go to the scene of the incident to conduct an appropriate investigation and autopsy, and the forensic service was simply informed about the tragic event.

Those responsible for the ambulance called by the police and the police officers who took the matter into their own hands should have left the body at the place where it was found and immediately called a medical examiner to make a decision on the circumstances of the tragic death. Which, for unknown reasons, did not happen.

This story has already caused outrage from local Roma communities and may lead to protests and riots. Are the police really not getting enough of those stories (like with the 17-year-old gypsy in Thebes), which take place in other regions, and they wanted extreme sports?
