“Changing of the climate” And “green” The transition sought by the European Union and government is expected to soon affect home heating systems, following the many millions of cars that are due to be taken out of service in the next few years.

One of the changes – or rather twists – concerns the new standards that residential buildings, both new and old, must meet. Simply put, the Europeans decided that even old apartment buildings would have to become new.

Whether this means that thousands of apartments will be improved or devalued is still unknown. One thing is for sure: this will require serious investment from the current owners. Starting with new buildings, they must be net zero emissions by 2030, so simply put, we are forgetting about the burners. For older buildings, things get even more complicated, despite the transition period being 16 years from today, because… the devil is in the details.

In particular, Member States will introduce measures to decarbonise heating systems and phase out the use of fossil fuels for heating and cooling, with the aim of eliminating fossil fuel boilers completely by 2040. However, unfortunately, there is a closer date that will “affect” the most vulnerable segments of the population. Member States EU will have to stop subsidizing autonomous fossil fuel boilers by 2025.

Financial incentives will still be available for hybrid heating systems, such as those combining a boiler with a solar thermal system or a heat pump. Simply put, from 2025, according to the directive, heating subsidies, whether oil or gas, must end.
