How Greeks use the Internet – what ELSTAT research shows


According to the survey ELSTAT, 86.9% of households have access to the Internet without leaving home. In fact, in the first quarter of 2023, 85% of the population aged 16 to 74 used the Internet, which is 2.2% more than in 2022.

According to the survey, 94.1% of those who used the Internet in the first quarter of 2023 use the Internet daily or almost daily.

The activities that have recorded the greatest growth over the past year (Q1 2022 – Q1 2023) are the sale of goods or services.

As for the reasons for using the Internet, the main activities are reading news online on websites, newspapers, magazines and searching for information about products and services (89.2% and 89.1%, respectively). This data concerns 9 out of 10 people aged 16 to 74 who used the Internet in the first quarter of 2023.

Activity
Activities that have recorded the greatest growth over the past year (Q1 2022 – Q1 2023) are selling goods or services (e.g. on e-Bay, Facebook Marketplace) (+14.9%) and publishing opinions on social or political issues (e.g. on websites or social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) (+10.9%). The largest declines last year were recorded in participation in online consultations or voting on social or political issues (-29.5%) and in searching for medical information (-15.9%).

Among the country’s total population aged 16 to 74, approximately two in three (67.0%) used e-government services between April 2022 and March 2023 for personal use. There is no statistically significant change (+0.9%) compared to the period April 2021 – March 2022 (66.4%). It is clarified that to calculate the tariff until 2021, services and actions carried out within the framework of the use of electronic government services were not recorded in detail.

Regarding the population aged 16–74 years who used the Internet between April 2022 and March 2023, the percentage of those who used e-government services for personal purposes is 77.8% (-1.5%).

Official documents
About 6 out of 10 (61.8%) received official documents in their personal account (tax payment, copy of criminal record, notarial deeds and state registry certificates, vaccination certificate, rapid test result, notification and reminder to sign up for vaccination, prescription referral , national examination result, etc.) through the website or application of a government service or authority.

A personal account is considered to be a personal email address, a digital mailbox in the citizen’s mailbox (my.gov.gr) and/or in the Independent Directorate of State Revenue (“myAADE”), a mobile phone through received SMS messages, as well as mobile applications, for example, the “myhealth” application.

Meeting
4 in 10 (39.1%) made an appointment with the civil service through the website or app for personal reasons. Typical examples are meetings with KEPEFKA OAEDby the Inland Revenue (AADE), with an NHS doctor in a primary care department, including booking a Covid-19 vaccination.

12.0% of the population aged 16 to 74 who used the internet between April 2022 and March 2023 filed their tax return online themselves. A decrease of 12.4% was recorded compared to the previous year.

55.3% of the population aged 16–74 years who have ever used the Internet at least once made an online purchase or ordered goods or services via the Internet for personal use in the first quarter of 2023. Compared to the corresponding percentage a year ago (53.2%), an increase of 4.0% was recorded, and compared to 2013, an increase of 104.8% was recorded.
