Another shameful event for our country was revealed by the relevant Eurostat study, which concerns the ability of citizens to undergo medical examinations, diagnoses and tests.

In Greece, 16.7% of citizens are registered who find it difficult to do so, either due to poverty, or because of a long waiting list (for free medical care) and even because of the long distance (applies to residents of villages and remote areas).

In fact, according to the study in question, Greece is in the worst position among European Union member states in terms of the ability of citizens to undergo even the most necessary medical examinations.

Our country, homeland Hippocrates (a physician who is one of the most outstanding personalities in the history of medicine, Ἱπποκράτης, 460 – 377 BC), Alcmaeon (founder of medicine in Ancient Greece, physician and philosopher, student of Pythagoras, Ἀλκμαίων, 6th–5th centuries BC. Alcmaeon developed surgical instruments and performed brain operations) and Diogenes of Apollonius (Διογένης ὁ Ἀπολλωνιάτης, who made a significant contribution to medicine) now represents the “outskirts of civilization”, where medical services are not available to citizens in full.

According to Eurostat, Greece is followed by Finland (9.6%), Romania (7.9%) and Latvia (7.1%). And the countries with the lowest percentages of residents who “do not have access to medicine” are Germany (0.5%), Czech Republic (0.3%) and Cyprus (0.1%).
