The longest motorway in Greece: how much is the toll?

The development of modern transport required the creation of several new highways. The length of the largest in our country is 670 km.

The Egnatia Road (Εγνατία Οδός) has been the great dream of the inhabitants of northern Greece and beyond for more than 30 years. I always wanted Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace to be united.

The inclusion of the highway in the priority projects of the Trans-European transport networks cemented its image as “a route connecting the markets of the East and the large industrial centers of the West.”

Highway 2 (A2), as Εγνατία Οδός is called, is the longest motorway in Greece, with a length of 670 kilometers (with a width of 25 meters) and is part of the European route 90.

It originates in the city of Igoumenitsa, located in western Greece, and then crosses the entire northern part of the country, reaching Alexandroupolis, located on the border with Turkey. Along the entire length of the highway there are branches from it in the direction of Bulgaria, Albania, and Macedonia.

The highway passes through the most picturesque mountainous regions of Greece, this a beautiful, wide and comfortable road, equipped with modern electronic surveillance and safety control equipment. The highway runs approximately along the same route as the ancient Egnatian roadbuilt during the Roman period, in the 2nd century BC, and connected Byzantium with Apollonia.

Egnatia Odos has 73 twin road tunnels with a total length of 100 km. The construction of the highway cost approximately 6 billion euros, and the construction of tunnels – 1.8 billion euros.

The first toll booths along Egnatia Odos were Diodia in Polymylos (opened in September 2010). There are currently 13 toll booths. Its size ranges from 50 euro cents to 2.40 euros. The total cost of the 13 fees (for car travel) is 19.20 euros.
