Expert opinion: boars will soon roam the streets like cows in India

The appearance of wild boars in more and more areas is causing concern among the local authorities of Thessaloniki.

Mayors are sounding the alarm about another serious accident on the highway. Authorities have expressed concern that the wild boar population will increase even further. In the summer of 2022 alone, in Kilkis, two people were killed and three police officers were injured after a patrol car collided with a herd of wild boars.

As noted by Mr. Yiannis Kartalis, the Deputy Mayor for Cleanliness, Ecology and Recycling of the Municipality of Pilaya Chortiatis has repeatedly encountered wild boars in the courtyards of houses. According to experts, the increase in their population from year to year reaches 100%.

According to Mr. Christos Vlachos, Professor Emeritus of Forestry and Environment, “What we are seeing are hybrids of wild animals that have been produced due to human influence on nature. While on a European scale this is a global phenomenon.”

“Wild boars have a more aggressive disposition,” added Mr. Vlachos, “but hybrids are always friendly to humans. These two species are radically different from each other, and we will have to get used to their existence … We need a holistic approach … Rome, Barcelona and Berlin is under siege by thousands of wild boars,” he concluded.

Mr. Dimitris Pantelakis, president of the Thessaloniki Hunting Club, said that he was recently forced to hunt wild boar on Pontoux Street in Kalamaria, very close to the school. “We, as a hunting association, can do our part to reduce their population, otherwise they will roam the streets like cows in India,” Mr Pantelakis said.
