The National Weather Service has issued an emergency advisory calling for heavy rain, snow and gale-force winds today, with temperatures expected to drop significantly.
The bad weather, named Bettina, is not joking: snow fell in Western Macedonia, a train stopped in Afidnes, a bus got stuck in Kaimaktsalan. The warning ΕΜΥ says about the weather for Sunday November 26:
Hurricane-force winds expected:
- in the west/northwest from 8 to 9, in some places in the Ionian Sea gusts up to 10 on the Beaufort scale;
- in the east, west, north-west 8, in some places 9 points on the Beaufort scale;
- The wind is forecast to weaken in the afternoon.
Heavy rains and storms:
- on the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese;
- temporarily in the morning hours in eastern Macedonia, Thrace and southern Crete.
- weather conditions are expected to improve in the afternoon.
Snowfall in the first half of the day in the continental mountains, in the foothills of Thrace, Macedonia and at times in Epirus, approximately at an altitude of 500-700 meters, possibly locally in lower altitude areas of eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
Weather in Attica
Partly cloudy until the afternoon, followed by a chance of some localized showers. Winds from the west/northwest at force 6 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, gradually weakening from midday. Temperature from 4°C to 14°C.
Weather in Thessaloniki
In the morning there will be a temporary increase in cloudiness. Wind northwest, from 6 to 8 and at times up to 9 on the Beaufort scale, gradually weakening in the afternoon. Temperature from 3°C to 8°C.
