Northern Greece dressed in white

Northern Greece was covered in snow this morning – winter has come into its own. A particularly difficult situation has developed in the highlands of Thessaloniki, in Hortiati and Oreokastro.

Problems arose due to frost and stormy winds throughout the wider region. Due to the heavy snowfall on the mountain roads, they instantly became icy. Another cold front hit in the last days of November. A sharp cold snap and hurricane-force winds swept across most of Northern Greece. Night temperatures dropped below zero.

Local municipalities have mobilized salt spreaders to keep the road network open. Snow fell yesterday afternoon also in western Macedonia and even in the towns of Florina and Kozani, with snowplows struggling to keep roads open.

The snow lay like a “heavy load” on the roofs of houses, which were about to collapse under its weight. The accumulating snow has already broken power lines in many places, plunging several settlements into darkness. As government officials say, “there is heavy snowfall throughout the region’s road network, and snowplows are trying to cope with the scourge.”

Traffic police have stepped up checks on the roads, ordering drivers to immediately use chains. According to Forecast Weather, there were problems on the Kozani-Ptolemais road and cars were blocked. Heavy snowfall was also recorded yesterday in Grevena.
