Road accidents: 3 Greek regions ranked among the deadliest in the EU


According to road traffic crash data published today by the European Statistical Office, road traffic in 2021 EU 19,917 deaths occurred. A number corresponding to 45 road traffic deaths per million inhabitants.

According to Eurostat data for 2021, three Greek regions are among the deadliest for road accidents in the EU: the Peloponnese (109), the Northern Aegean Islands (103) and Central Greece (89).

However, especially it is important that the figures refer to 2021, when travel bans and restrictions were still in effect in some places due to the coronavirus epidemic. The EU region with the highest rate of road traffic deaths was North-West (Bulgaria), with 133 deaths recorded.

Total in 20 EU regions per million inhabitants have to at least 80 deaths as a result of an accident. These territories were mainly in Romania (six regions), Bulgaria (three regions) and Greece – in the three regions mentioned above. Next come Croatia, Poland and Portugal with two regions each, while the rest are located in Belgium and Italy.

Some of the highest death rates are found in rural areas, while urban areas and capital cities tend to have much lower rates.

The lowest mortality rates from road traffic accidents were recorded in the urban areas of Brussels (7 deaths per million inhabitants), Vienna (8), and Stockholm and Bremen (9 each).
